As the first trumpet repeated the first angel message and so forth, the second trumpet is a repeat of the
second angel message, the beginning of the second plague and comes forth at the end time opening of
the second seal. (See No. 53, "Seals, Trumpets and Plagues" for a discussion of the first trumpet.) Here
is the scripture of the second trumpet.
"And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea:
and the third part of the sea became blood; and the third part of the creatures which were in the sea,
and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed." (Rev. 8:8,9).
Again, the discussion of the trumpets in history by V. T. Houteff provides a good starting point. ""As the
fulfillment of the first trumpet brings us up to and including the flood, the time of the second trumpet
must therefore be sought in the first post-flood destruction preceded by a message. And to locate its
beginning, we need only to reason that since scripturally a mountain represents a church or a kingdom
(Zech. 8:3; Isa. 2:3), then the "great mountain's" being enveloped in fire, as was the bush from which God
spoke to Moses (Ex. 3:2, 4), can mean only that God's presence was then in the midst of and round about
His people. And at that time they were, we know, the Israelite movement the first post-flood church with
a message -- the ceremonial system. Leading this mighty army of the Lord, went the pillar of fire before;
and shielding it, followed the pillar of cloud behind."
""After the mountain was afire, it was "cast into the sea." The sea, the storehouse of the waters,
represents the original abode of "peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues" (Rev. 17:15).
Hence, while it stands for the world as a whole the place wherein the nations (waters) reside, it
definitely localizes the place wherein the church (mountain) appears. This is borne out by the prophet's
words: "Sing unto the Lord a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the
sea [where the world originated -- Palestine], and all that is therein." Isa. 42:10."
""Bear in mind that only the third part of the "sea [world] became blood," also that the Israelite
movement reached only a part of the world (in symbolical terms, the "third part" of the "sea") -- those
heathen with whom the movement came into close contact, especially in the promised land. Very
obviously, then, the "mountain" is symbolical of the Old Testament church."
""When the "mountain" (the church) was cast into the "sea," and "the third part of the sea became
blood," "the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died." The "blood" again, of
course, represents mortal life. This being so, then it follows that the third part of the "sea" (world) which
became "blood" (life), was that portion into which the "mountain" was "cast," into which God's people
were brought. Accordingly, that portion, Palestine, became a life-saving refuge to those who fully united
with the movement, but a shambles for those who did not, just as Noah's ark was a life-saving refuge to
those who entered in, but an agent of destruction to those who remained out."
""Concerning the third part of the creatures which died, the Bible would be in guilt of gross superfluity
to say that they "had life" if by that It meant mortal life, for how could they have died unless they had
mortal life? Hence they were figurative only of those living who were privileged to have eternal life, and
who once embraced it, but who later, through wickedness, lost it. Thus, only a symbolical "third part" of
all who had eternal life, but who sinned it away ("died"), were destroyed."
""The "sea" being symbolical of the old world, the "ships" must accordingly be figurative of objects
which were supposed to shelter and to convey people, and which, though promising to transport them
safely over the sea (world), fail to reach the shore beyond. They, consequently, can portray only the
heathen religions and their temples, which offered to their adherents transport to a world hereafter. But
not seaworthy, they met with disaster while in voyage. Both they and their temples were destroyed by
the Israelites in response to the command of the Lord: "Ye shall utterly destroy all the places [temples --
"ships"], wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods upon the high mountains, and
upon the hills and under every green tree: and ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars,
and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the
names of them out of that place." Deut. 12:2, 3."" (V. T. Houteff, "Final Warning," 1942, p. 43-47).
To summarize Houteff: the great mountain burning with fire is the Old Testament church in the light of
the Ceremonial Law, the sea represents the world, and a third part of the sea represents specifically
Palestine, where God placed the Old Testament church. The Old Testament church was a life saving
refuge to those who embraced it, but a destruction (loss of eternal life) to those who opposed it. The
ships represent heathen temples which were destroyed with their worshippers by the Israelite army at
We are now obviously in the time of the New Testament church. With the message of Christ as well as
the Holy Ghost (the two tongues of flame on the heads of the Apostles - see Acts 2:1-4) we have twice
the fire (light) that the Old Testament church had. The great mountain burning with fire must now
represent a part of the Christian church burning in the light of the Ceremonial Law.
In his explanation of the trumpets in history, Houteff said the sea represented the world. In the days of
the end time trumpets, the sea represents the third of mankind that are now Christian. This change is in
keeping with the shift from physical meanings in the historic trumpets, to spiritual meanings in the end
time trumpets. Because of this shift from the physical to the spiritual, the meaning of the third part of the
sea has changed from a land area, Palestine, to a part of a spiritual community, Christianity.
In the words of Houteff: "Palestine, became a life-saving refuge to those who fully united with the
movement, but a shambles for those who did not, just as Noah's ark was a life-saving refuge to those
who entered in, but an agent of destruction to those who remained out." (Ibid). So part of the Christian
church in the light of Christ and burning with the fire of the Ceremonial Law (which was the light of its
predecessor, the Old Testament church), becomes a life saving refuge to those who fully embrace its
message and an agent of destruction to those who fight against it.
Note that while Christ confirmed the covenant (the Old Testament Law) during the seven years of His
ministry to the Jews (3 1/2 years in person before the cross, 3 1/2 years after the crucifixion by the
disciples), He did away with the animal sacrifices and temple offerings. "And He (Messiah) shall confirm
the covenant with many for one week (seven years): and in the midst of the week He shall cause the
sacrifice and the oblation to cease..." (Dan. 9:27).
The ships still represent temples, but now those temples include Christian churches who worship God
according to Satan's dictates. As the beginning of the second trumpet was the purification of the Holy
Land, Palestine; so in the end time this trumpet heralds the purification of the Christian church.
The judgment that accompanied this trumpet was as small in relation to the Christian church as the Holy
Land, formerly Palestine now Israel, is to the world. It was the judgment of God on a tiny church in Waco,
Texas. There are two patterns for the judgment of the wilderness flock found in Numbers. Fire came
down from God twice to burn up parts of the flock. What happened to Koresh's flock conforms to both. It
conforms to the first in size.
"And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and His anger was
kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts
of the camp. And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was
quenched. And he called the name of the place Taberah (burning): because the fire of the Lord burnt
among them." (Num. 11:1-3). Note that the fire was "in the uttermost parts of the camp." Likewise
Koresh's church was on the fringes of Christianity, with its guns, child brides and polygamy.
Koresh's church also fulfilled the pattern of Numbers 16. I'm going to reproduce the pertinent part of No.
19, "Prophecies Of The End Time Church" to show you.
""Just as David Koresh and Lois Roden's executive council tried to steal the Branch Davidian church
from its true messengers, a group of important men led by Korah tried to steal the congregation from
Moses and Aaron. "Now Korah, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of
Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Rueben, took men: and they rose up before Moses, with certain
of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men
of renown: And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto
them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation is holy, everyone of them, and the Lord is
among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?" (Numbers 16:1-
""So Moses challenged Korah and the two hundred and fifty princes of Israel. "And Moses said unto
Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow: And take
every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the Lord every man his censer, two
hundred and fifty censers: thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer. And they took every man his
censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the
congregation with Moses and Aaron." (Numbers 16:16-18)."
""Then the Lord told Moses to call the congregation away from the dwellings of Korah, Abiram and
Dathan. "And he spoke unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked
men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins." (Numbers 16:26). And the
congregation drew away."
""And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works: for I have not
done them of mine own mind. If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after
the visitation of all men; then the Lord hath not sent me. But if the Lord make a new thing, and the earth
open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick (alive)
into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the Lord. And it came to pass, as he
made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: and the
earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained to
Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the
earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. And there came out a fire
from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.” (Numbers 16:28-
""Pits under the building that led to tunnels are still visible in the ruin of Koresh's church. Like Korah,
nothing is more likely than David Koresh going down into a pit (that led to a tunnel). Further, the fire on
April 19, 1993 killed almost 80 persons. So the story of Korah helps illuminate what happened to Koresh's
church."" (No. 19, "Prophecies Of The End Time Church").
The Christian church can count itself lucky that this judgment was so tiny. The full fulfillment of the
pattern of Numbers 16 is yet future, when the struggle between Christ and Satan for the leadership of
the church causes God to send fire down from heaven onto the whole Christian church. Only the
Kingdom of God will be spared, because it will be far from the cities. Just so the land of Goshen was
spared the worst of the plagues God brought upon Egypt.
The second angel message is repeated during the second trumpet, because the angel messages are
the instructions of the trumpets, a pattern established by the Battle of Jericho. Here is the scripture.
"And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made
all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." (Rev. 14:8).
This scripture in turn leads us to Babylon the Great. "And there came one of the seven angels which had
the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of
the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: with whom the kings of the earth have committed
fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So
he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured
beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in
purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in
her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: and upon her forehead was a name
written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus:
and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration." (Rev. 17:1-6).
Houteff has explained this woman better that anyone else. ""In the first place, Babylon personifies the
forthcoming ecclesiastical-political-economic system of the nations, not some institution or organization;
second, that the beast she drives is a figure of her dominion; and third, that it is about to pass from
prophecy into history -- indeed, is already beginning to loom up out of the haze as did the shores of
America to Christopher Columbus and his companions as they approached the great Western Continent.
"The beast's being driven by the woman, Babylon clearly reveals three important truths: first, that the
call of God's people to come out of Babylon (Rev. 18:4), is a call for them to come out from among the
nations that are symbolized by the beast which she is driving (ruling); second, that the called ones are to
come out from her sin-filled dominion because it is to be ruined by the plagues; and third, their coming
out necessitates their going into a place where sin does not exist and where there is no danger of the
plagues' falling. Thus their coming out of her dominion must be their going into God's kingdom."" (V. T.
Houteff, "The World Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow," 1941, p. 36). (Also see No. 38, "A Snare For Babylon.")
Houteff said in 1941 that this woman was "about to pass from prophecy into history." She is here today.
She rules the majority of the Christian church that worships God according to Satan's dictates. She is
allied with the political forces of the Christian nations that give her Sunday Sabbath the weight of law
and also allied with the super-rich who trust her to keep the masses content in their poverty. She is
responsible for years of attempts to prevent the founding of the Kingdom of God, with its policy of land
as a human right.
God preserves Babylon, this ecclesiastical-political-economic system of the nations, until her
destruction in the seventh plague. (See Rev. 16:17-19). So what does she have to do with us. Just this.
God has put her under a curse.
Ancient Babylon sinned against God twice. First, she sinned when she stole from God, seizing the
vessels and precious metals from the temple in Jerusalem. (See 2 Kings 24 and 25.) Then she
blasphemed God when she used the holy vessels from the temple in a drunken revel. (See Daniel 5.)
The scripture "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine
of the wrath of her fornication" (Rev. 14:8), also points us to the judgment of David Koresh and his flock.
There is a long explanation in the article No. 38, "A Snare For Babylon" that compares the two land
ripoffs of the Davidian and Branch Davidian churches with the thefts of Babylon from the temple in
Jerusalem. When you read it you will be startled by the parallels. Suffice to say that the land ripoffs of
the 1960 and the 1980s, orchestrated as they were by the ecclesiastical-political-economic system of the
nations which is personified by Babylon, fulfills the first fall of Babylon in the time of the second angel
sounding a trumpet. Koresh was the key party in the second land ripoff.
Babylon fell again, ("Babylon is fallen, is fallen"), when she blasphemed God. The replacement of
Koresh's corrupt message for the true message of the church was an insult to God. Koresh preached
the femininity of the Holy Ghost while he defiled little girls. Koresh preached Christ while he stockpiled
weapons and shot his enemies, first George Roden, then members of the ATF.
And if you look at the articles and the books that were published about the Standoff and about Koresh,
inevitably they will tell you that Koresh's flock was the true Branch Davidian church. That was part of the
conspiracy by the ecclesiastical-political-economic system of the nations which is personified by
Babylon, and because a true message from God was defiled and covered up, that was and is blasphemy.
Small wonder that God sent fire and burned up Koresh's flock.
I have said that the second angel message is the theme or text for the second trumpet. This theme is
repeated again in Rev. 18.
"And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth
was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is
fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils (hard core satanists), and the hold of every foul
spirit (degenerate), and a cage (prison) of every unclean and hateful bird (jailbird). For all nations have
drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication
with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I
heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her
sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath
remembered her iniquities." (Rev. 18:1-5).
On an international level, the fall of Babylon (seen in a microcosm in the destruction of David Koresh) is
this: first Babylon takes the tithe for teaching people to worship God according to Satan's dictates, then
Babylon persecutes the Kingdom of God and suppresses its message. Babylon did both of these things
to the end time church that David Koresh stole with a lie.
Over the centuries, Babylon has perverted the Christian church into reverencing a non-biblical Sabbath
and feast days, and taken away the new moons. God allowed this: "I will also cause all her mirth to cease,
her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts." (Hosea 2:11). Why?
Because it is a test of every Christian's loyalty. Even Christ was tested to determine whether His
allegiance was to God or to Satan.
"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the
wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they
were ended, he afterward hungered." (Luke 4:1,2). Christ was not only tested spiritually, He was tested
physically by fasting. You are simply being asked to follow God's instructions in the Bible and put your
faith in Him to keep His promises. "And he (Abraham) believed in the Lord; and He (God) counted it to
him (Abraham) for righteousness." (Gen. 15:6).
That brings us to the plague associated with this thunder. First, consider this: the first plague, AIDS/HIV,
associated with the first of the seven Spirits of God (Houteff, third angel message, first trumpet), left no
footprint upon the earth until after his death in 1955. (Scientists say stored blood samples from an
American malaria research project carried out in the Congo in 1959 show one early AIDS/HIV infection.)
Although the scourge is dire in Africa, it is not yet a world wide plague.
So it is with the plague associated with the second of the seven spirits of God, the second trumpet.
Before this plague is poured out in a vial of the wrath of God, it is merely the defilement of the Christian
message and the loss of eternal life for those who choose to abide in that message.
This is the second plague. "And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the
blood of a dead man; and every living soul died in the sea." (Rev. 16:3).
As I said before, the sea is the Christian church. It is the great storehouse of living water. In keeping
with the shift from physical meanings in the historic trumpets, to spiritual meanings in the end time
trumpets, in the days of the end time trumpets, the sea represents the third of mankind that are now
According to the Bible, human blood is unclean. "And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her
flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until
the even." (Lev. 15:19). Dead bodies are seven times more unclean. "He that toucheth the dead body of
any man shall be unclean seven days." (Num. 19:11). So when the sea "became as the blood of a dead
man," the message of the church had become so perverted that it stinks in God's sight.
A living soul is a soul that deserves eternal life. Yet those living souls die, lose eternal life. Why? They
know the truth, that the message of the church is polluted, but they turn their back on the call to come
out of the perverse church and come into the Kingdom of God. They remain in the sea, the defiled
church, until their probation closes and they are lost. "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received
the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for
of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries." (Hebrews 10:26,27). They die
when the plagues are poured out, if not sooner, and their names are blotted out of the Book of Life.
One final question, which I won't answer for you, is this trumpet the great trumpet that begins the
gathering? I suggest that you read No. 37, "The Great Trumpet of Isaiah 27" and decide for yourself.
