The third trumpet, like the first and second trumpets, is a repeat of the third angel message, the
beginning of the third plague and comes forth at the end time opening of the third seal. (See No. 53,
"Seals, Trumpets and Plagues" for a discussion of the first trumpet, and No. 54, "The Second Trumpet.")
Here is the scripture of the third trumpet.
"And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it
fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; and the name of the star is called
Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters,
because they were made bitter." (Rev. 8:10,11).
Houteff discussed this trumpet in its historical context. He said: ""Falling from heaven, the "star" clearly
shows that it can only represent some sort of heavenly object descending to earth. Its burning as a
"lamp" is indicative of an object having intrinsic power to give light, and the only such light-bearing
object coming from heaven is the Word: "Thy Word," corroborates the Psalmist, "is a lamp unto my feet,
and a light unto my path." Ps. 119:105. And since the star falls only upon the "third part" of the rivers
(nations -- Rev. 17:15), it reveals itself as symbolical of the Old Testament Scriptures, for it was the Old
Testament Scriptures that were not at that time accessible to all the nations (rivers) of the earth, but only
to a portion (a symbolical, not actual, third part) of them."
""Though upon the "rivers," the star fell on the third part only, it lit upon all "the fountains of waters."
This fact shows that the Old Testament Scriptures fell into the hands of two classes of people -- "rivers"
and "fountains." The former one represents nations which came in close contact with the Bible. (These
are such as "the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria." Isa. 8:7.) The latter
represents His chosen people (the twelve tribes of Israel), in whom His Word was the waters of life,
making them living fountains. Thus "he that believeth on Me," declared the Lord Himself, "...out of his
belly shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7:38); and: "the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of
corn and wine." Deut. 33:28." (V. T. Houteff, "Final Warning," 1942, p. 48,49).
Regarding the name of the star, Wormwood, Hourteff said: "" A bitter and aromatic herb, wormwood acts
both as a cathartic and as a tonic -- qualities and virtues the significance of which must discover the
symbolic meaning of the name "Wormwood." A cathartic being something possessing purging and
cleansing virtue, the name "Wormwood" must, therefore, first of all, denote a purging agent. And as the
Word of God has the power to purge away the cause and effects of spiritual debility and to restore
healthy functions and tone to the sin-sick soul, it obviously is the only such agent which, in this
connection, the name "Wormwood" fittingly symbolizes."
""Consequently, the bitter's cathartic and tonic virtues denote that the Word of God, though indeed a
bitter to one's carnal taste, is to the honest, who love It for the good It will do them (purify the heart and
soul), their sweetest joy; whereas to the dishonest, whose carnal taste is their god, and who love not the
truth, the Word is as gall to their taste. And doubly so it is because they love, above the ways of
salvation, the ways of the world, and these It condemns."
""The herb's aromatic quality reveals that those who eat the Word of God, be It ever so bitter to their
carnal taste, will find in It the surpassing aroma of heavenly influence, which will cause them to breathe
out "a savor of life unto life."" (Ibid, p. 49,50).
To summarize Houteff, the star represents the Old Testament scriptures, the name Wormwood
symbolizes their ability to purge and cleanse sin, the rivers on which they fell represent the nations
around the Holy Land that had contact with the scriptures, and the fountains of water represent the
twelve tribes of Israel, God's chosen people. Those who die because the waters become bitter are those
who hate the bitter message, "because they love, above the ways of salvation, the ways of the world,
and these It condemns." (Ibid, p. 50).
As the second trumpet in historical context showed the gift of the Ceremonial Law, with its
commemorative and prophetic aspects; so the third trumpet shows the gift of Bible history and
prophecy. Both Bible history and prophecy will be guides to us in the end time. "Now all these things
happened unto them for ensamples (examples): and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the
ends of the world are come." (1 Corr. 10:11).
As the third trumpet becomes the third end time trumpet, its meaning becomes more spiritual than
physical. While our forefathers understood the physical requirements of the scriptures, they did not
understand the prophecies. Christ, however, in opening the seals, is lifting the veil on the prophecy of
the Old Testament. "But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken
away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ." (2 Cor. 3:14).
In the end time, this trumpet brings us to a full understanding of the role of prophecy and, to a lesser
extent Bible history, in the founding of God's Kingdom on earth. Quite simply, prophecy becomes a road
map that leads directly to the Kingdom of God. Prophecy, which was interpreted and understood during
the angel messages, is broadcast (falls on) the rivers (nations who know the Bible) and the fountains
(God's chosen people, the twelve tribes of Israel).
Houteff has said that this star (message), Wormwood is bitter to those with carnal taste. This is
particularly true of the Christian church, many of whose members rely heavily on grace as they continue
to sin and repent the same sins again and again. Many would prefer to be raised by grace into heaven
during the Rapture, and not have to flee the cities, and live up to the Ten Commandment code of
The destruction of those who reject the bitter truth is yet future (as of June 10, 2009), it falls on those
who hate the bitter message, "because they love, above the ways of salvation, the ways of the world,
and these It condemns." (Ibid, p. 50). This destruction of those who reject the truth is the last judgment
of Revelation 14, the judgment of the vineyard, the Christian church.
"And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him
that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the
earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the
vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was
trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the
space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs." (Rev. 14:18-20).
Christ is the vine and we are the branches. "I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman. Every
branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it,
that it may bring forth more fruit. "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself,
except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He
that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing. If a
man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them
into the fire, and they are burned." (John 15:1,2,4-6).
It is our job as Christians to bear fruit, to teach of Christ through word and deed, "every branch in Me
that beareth not fruit He (God) taketh away." We must abide in Christ to bear fruit, "the branch cannot
bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine." If we do not walk as Christ walked, God will cast us off, "if
a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them
into the fire, and they are burned."
This judgment is pending. The first judgment of Revelation 14 came forth during the end time opening of
the first seal, first trumpet. (WWII and the Holocaust, Rev. 14:9-11). The second judgment of Revelation
14 came forth during the end time opening of the second seal, second trumpet (the judgment on David
Koresh, Rev. 14:15,16). So this judgment is timely during the end time opening of the third seal, third
trumpet. (In earlier writings I did not understand why it was delayed, and wrote accordingly.)
There is reason to believe that the judgment of the Christian church takes place in conjunction with a
world wide judgment which is also associated with the third trumpet. This makes sense, because the
Christian church is a world wide church.
These two judgments are likely conjoined, because third trumpet is a repeat of the third angel message.
"And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image,
and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God,
which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire
and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: and the smoke of
their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the
beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name." (Rev. 14:9-11).
During the end time opening of the first seal, this third angel message was fulfilled by World War II and
the Holocaust (see No. 39, "The Judgments Of Ezekiel 7"). Because the beast of Rev. 14:9-11 is a symbol
of the One World Government, when the third angel message is fulfilled again as the third trumpet, it will
also be fulfilled as a world war, a war involving not many nations, but all nations.
In the WWII judgment, the Lamb was V. T. Houteff, the first of the seven Spirits of God. The holy angels
were the sealed servants of God in his flock. When this judgment reoccurs in connection with the third
trumpet, the Lamb will be Christ's King, and the sealed servants of God, on earth as angels, will be the
144,000, who are as perfect before God as the holy angels. "These are they (the 144,000) which were not
defiled with women (false churches); for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb
whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to
the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God."
Those who worship the beast or his image (and are therefore destroyed in this world wide judgment) are
those who refuse to leave Babylon. They remain faithful to the ecclesiastical-political-economic system
of the nations, which rules our current world. Each person who chooses the world instead of God's
Kingdom, "shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup
of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone."
"For an understanding of finding safety during the third trumpet judgments, consider the end time
message of the third seal. As the second seal was opened, Christ sent the second of the Spirits of God
to relay the contents of the seal to earth. Eventually, that message was blown as the second trumpet.
(See No. 53, "The Second Trumpet.") A similar pattern pertains to the end time message of the third seal.
(See No. 48, "Opening The Third Seal.")
This is the scripture of the third seal. "And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast
say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in
his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and
three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine." (Rev. 6:5,6).
To summarize the end time message of this seal: in the end time, the balances indicate judgment, the
black color of the horse is a sign of mourning and death, the measure of wheat is the 144,000 and the
three measures of barley are a large number of Messianic Jews, perhaps a half million. The penny is
assurance of salvation to servants of God, they are sealed. The oil and the wine are the prophetic
scriptures and the gospels. (For the exact details, see No. 48, "Opening The Third Seal.")
In the time of the third seal, the Kingdom of God begins to form. I have said many times that it forms on
isolated farms. There are several ways to be part of it. First, however, you must have the right spirit. You
must obey Christ's Great Commandments. "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the
second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment
greater than these." (John 12:30,31). If you love God, you will do your best to keep His Commandments. If
you love Christ, you will treat your fellow men and women in the Kingdom of God with respect and equity.
If you own a farm well away from the cities and wish to be part of the Kingdom of God, begin to keep the
true Sabbath, and the Feast Days and New Moons. Invite others to join you. Appoint a person or persons
to keep the Daily. Allow other like-minded people to live on your farm as it will support them.
If you do not own a farm, buy a farm well away from the cities. If you can't afford a farm yourself, form a
group to buy a farm, join such a group, or involve yourself with a Sabbath keeping, Feast Day observing
church and convince the pastor that it is time for the church to buy land well away from the cities. When
you get the land, keep the Sabbath, the Feast Days, New Moons and the Daily there. If you are willing to
relocate, Mother Earth News would probably be a good place to advertise for like-minded individuals.
These farms will shelter the 144,000 until they are called to join the Lamb on Mount Zion. (See Rev. 14:1-
5). Keeping the Sabbath and Feast Days and New Moons and the Daily is important to secure God's
protection on your farm. The 144,000 sealed servants of God also protect you from the judgment of
Ezekiel 9 on the church. They have the seal of God on their forehead, the Law of God in their minds, see
Rev. 14:1. The judgment of Ezekiel 9 is upon those who do not have the mark on their forehead, but
those near a marked saint are spared.
"And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem (the
Christian church), and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the
abominations (terrible offenses against God's Law) that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others
He said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have
ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man
upon whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were
before the house." (Ez. 9:4-6).
In discussing the second trumpet, and the second angel message that preceded it, I quoted the
scripture which includes the call from Babylon. "And after these things I saw another angel come down
from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a
strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the
hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the
wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and
the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another
voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye
receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her
iniquities. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall
be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her." (Rev. 18:1-5,8).
Because the second angel message is repeated in the second trumpet, the first part of this scripture,
"Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen..." is the second trumpet. To refresh your memories, the second
angel message was "And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city,
because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." (Rev. 14:8). These
messages are almost identical, clearly one repeats the other.
The third trumpet is the call from Babylon. "Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her
sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." Please note, however, that the message is not heard from
the mouth of an earth bound Spirit of God, one of "the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth."
(Rev. 5:6). The message comes from a disembodied voice in heaven, "I heard another voice from
heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people..."
This voice from heaven is not a member of the Holy Family, they speak from the presence of God. "And
the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before
God." (Rev. 9:14). The four horns of the golden altar are a symbol of the four members of the Holy Family.
The context of the message identifies the Holy Ghost as this speaker, "a voice from the four horns of the
The voice from heaven is not an angel, angels frequently speak from heaven in the Revelation, but John
the Revelator could see them. "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the
everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and
tongue, and people." (Rev. 14:6).
The voice from heaven, calling God's people out of Babylon, is a martyr, killed in an unsuccessful
attempt to prevent the third trumpet from sounding. The martyrs speak from heaven but are not seen,
they rest under the altar. "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them
that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: and they cried with a loud
voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that
dwell on the earth?" (Rev. 6:9,10).
This voice from heaven is a martyr. Therefore her message is heard on earth from another mouth. The
principle is simple, if they fall in the flesh, replace them in the spirit. No death, no matter whose, will stop
God. Telling the full story of this martyr is yet future.
The third trumpet is the beginning of the third plague. "And the third angel poured out his vial upon the
rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art
righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed
the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy." (Rev. 16:
As Houteff showed us, discussing the third trumpet in historical context, the rivers represent the
nations that had contact with the scriptures, and the fountains of water represent the twelve tribes of
Israel, God's chosen people. (V. T. Houteff, "Final Warning," 1942, p. 48,49). Since the First Advent of
Christ, the Christian church has spread around the whole earth. Similarly, God spread the ten lost tribes
over most of the earth. So this plague effects the whole earth.
Blood is unclean, God's Law forbids us to drink it. "Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of
blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people." (Lev. 7:27). Drinking blood is a death decree.
There are two scriptures pertaining to the symbolic drinking of blood. There is the drinking of wine as a
symbol of Christ's blood, which is a blessing. "And He took the cup (of wine), and gave thanks, and gave
it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for
the remission of sins." (Matt. 26:27,28).
"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and
drink His blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life;
and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He that
eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him." (John 6:53-56). Partaking in the
Daily, as you see, is a great blessing on the saints.
The Daily, however, is not a shortcut to heaven. Speaking of this service, Paul warns, "Wherefore
whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and
blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the
Lord’s body." (1 Corr. 11:27-29).
Where there is a truth, there is also a satanic counterfeit. Here is the satanic counterfeit of the wine of
"And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto
me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been
made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and
I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and
ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious
stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
and upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And
Abominations Of The Earth. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the
blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration." (Rev. 17:1-6).
The golden is filled with "the wine of her (Mystery, Babylon the Great's) fornication. The woman is
"drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus." That means that she,
drunkenly, is deluded, thinking that wholesale murder will stop God's work. It also means that the cup in
her hand, from which she became drunken, is filled with blood.
Drinking the blood (wine) in the woman's cup is spiritual death. In light of this understanding of blood,
what then is the third plague? Here is the scripture again.
"And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be,
because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast
given them blood to drink; for they are worthy." (Rev. 16:4-6).
At the start of this plague, the doctrines of the rivers (nations, all religions) and the fountains of waters
(the twelve tribes, Christianity) become perverse and bloody as they preach against those founding the
Kingdom of God. They array themselves into a great confederacy, with murder on their minds. This
confederacy already exists and has martyred many. The religions of the world privately justify these
murders now. Eventually these murders will be justified from the pulpit, as the burning of martyrs was
justified in the past. This justification is damnation to those who accept it. In His own good time, God will
be avenged upon them as His enemies.
Finally, there are several clues to the manner of judgment God will visit on the earth in conjunction with
the third trumpet. It is a world wide judgment because it is a judgment on a world wide church,
Christianity. It involves fire and brimstone, "if any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his
mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is
poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and
brimstone." (Rev. 14:10). In World War II, this fire and brimstone was fulfilled by the "fire" bombing of
German cities and the atomic bombing of Japan. As that third angel message is repeated in the third end
time trumpet, we should expect more fire and brimstone. Finally, the Russian name Chernobyl means
Wormwood, the same name as the star that fell on the rivers and fountains of waters as the third trumpet
sounded. Chernobyl was the site of a 1986 nuclear power plant disaster. The final conclusion: in
conjunction with the third trumpet, there will be a world wide nuclear war.
