LESSONS FROM JONESTOWN
Exactly what happened 32 years ago, in 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana may never be determined. Some
facts are undisputed. A charismatic African American named Jim Jones, led a group of about 1000
members of his People's Temple to settle in a compound in Guyana. The settlement was based on
communist principles. Contact with Soviet Russia was made and immigration to the U.S.S.R. was
proposed.

Shortly thereafter, the leader Jim Jones experienced a rapid decline in health and escalating paranoia.
Relatives of members, concerned that their loved ones could not freely leave the compound, contacted
a crusading Congressman, Leo Ryan. Ryan had recently sponsored a new law which required the CIA to
disclose their operations to Congress and the President and to get all operations approved.

Although Congressman Ryan indicated that his report of the Jonestown settlement would be favorable,
he was attacked with a knife during his visit and slightly wounded. He was convinced to return to the
airfield for the night. A few people who wanted to leave the settlement went with him and his entourage.
An extra six seat plane was ordered for the defectors and when it arrived, one of them tried to
assassinate the others, wounded two and was subdued.

Then a group of 8 or 9 shooters came on to the airfield in a Jonestown vehicle and assassinated the
Congressman and several of his party. Two of the shooters were recognised by eye witnesses as
Jonestown inhabitants. Within hours over 900 people died in Jonestown from various causes.

A Guyanese coroner inspected the bodies at the site and noted that many had bullet wounds and
needle marks that could not have been self inflicted. Guyana performed no autopsies. The bodies were
left to decompose in the tropical heat for almost a week, then brought to the U.S. where only seven of
the more than 900 bodies were autopsied. Then the bodies were cremated despite the protests of some
relatives.

Obviously, these events leave a number of unanswered questions. First, Jim Jones rapid health decline
and severe paranoia could have been caused by attempts to poison him, which he recognised, but
could not prevent. Was this indeed what happened?

In terms of political climate, the 1970s saw repeated attempts by the Soviet Union to project their
influence into the Third World by a series of politico-military interventions. Was Jones' communist
compound perceived as a possible opening for expansion of Soviet influence in South America?

Congressman Ryan was a powerful and determined man who intended to get control of the CIA. He must
have suspected that the CIA was pursuing its own agenda. Could the CIA have sent the 6 or 7 shooters
that no one recognised to be sure of ridding themselves of this critic?

The investigation of the massacre was slow and slight; the verdict of suicide by poison was determined
before the investigation began. Was there a cover-up of what really happened to the people of
Jonestown?

I don't propose to answer these questions. Instead, the rest of this article will be about why various
cults that have been massacred have not been protected by God, and how to be protected as you leave
our crazy modern world. (For more on other massacres, see No. 13, "Killing The Cults.")

The error of the Jamestown settlement was simple. The Kingdom of God can not be formed on
communist principles.
God will ONLY sustain and protect those settlements which are formed according
to the prophecies of the Kingdom of God found in the scriptures
. Here is part of what the Bible says on
the creation of the Kingdom of God.

"But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be
established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow
unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and
to the house of the God of Jacob: and He will teach us of his ways, and we shall walk in His paths: for the
law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And He shall judge among many
people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their
spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war
anymore. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them
afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it." (Micah 4:1-4).

What does that mean? The "mountain of the house of the Lord" is the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of
God is also described as a mountain in the prophecy of Daniel 2.

According to the prophecy of Daniel 2, the King of Babylon dreams of a great image of gold, silver, brass
and iron with feet of iron and clay. Then he sees a stone taken from a mountain without hands. The
stone strikes the feet of the great image and it falls down and blows away. Then the stone grows into a
great mountain that takes over the whole earth.

The prophet Daniel explains to the king that the golden head of the image represents his empire, the
silver chest and arms represent an inferior empire to follow (the Medes and the Persians that
overthrew Babylon). The brass belly and thighs are a subsequent empire (the Greeks who overthrew
the Medo-Persian Empire) and the iron legs represent still another empire (the Romans who overthrew
the Greeks). The feet of iron and clay symbolize the world government after the fall of Rome, iron
nations held together by fragile clay bonds.

As the great image represents man's government, the stone represents God's government. The stone
is taken from the mountain (a Christian denomination) without hands, not by might, not by power, but by
a message sent by the Holy Spirit. The message of the stone, which starts as a tiny church, overthrows
men's government and then grows into a great mountain, the Christian Kingdom of God, and it takes
over the whole earth. (See Dan. 2:31-44.)

The prophecy "that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the
mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills" describes the beginning of the Kingdom of God, just
as the stone taken from the mountain without hands does, but at the time of the prophecy of Micah 4:1-4
(that we started with), the stone has swelled into a mountain, a recognisable denomination.

The stone denomination, which founds the Kingdom of God, is established among the great
denominations like the Baptists and Pentecostals, "established in the top of the mountains." It has
gained prominence above the small independent churches, which are symbolized in this prophecy as
hills, "it shall be exalted above the hills." The stone denomination actively recruits, "and people shall
flow unto it."

The stone denomination is international in scope, people of "many nations shall come, and say, Come,
and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob: and He will teach us
of his ways, and we shall walk in His paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord
from Jerusalem."

The people who come to join the denomination know that after joining they will be taught how to
worship God and walk with Him according to the Bible, "He will teach us of his ways, and we shall walk in
His paths." On God's behalf, those who know both the Old Testament Law and the words of Christ, will
teach the people from the scriptures. (For those of you who don't know your Bible, the Old Testament
ritual united with Christian worship is now found among the Messianic Jews and the Feast and Sabbath
keeping Christians.)

This Law, which is kept in the stone denomination and the Kingdom of God (Zion), will be broadcast to
the world, "for the law shall go forth of Zion." At the same time, the stone denomination will proclaim a
prophetic message explaining the prophecies and parables of the Kingdom of God found in the
scriptures, "and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."

Shortly thereafter (as God counts time), God will take control of the world and put an end to war. "And
He (God) shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their
swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against
nation, neither shall they learn war anymore."

Then there will be a great apportionment of land, as in the days when the Israelites captured the Holy
Land and every family in the Kingdom will be given land, "they shall sit
every man under his vine and
under
his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it."

"And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord: and then Joshua divided the land unto the
children of Israel according to their divisions." (Joshua 18:10).

The great economic engine that is the power behind the Kingdom of God also apportions land. This is
like the apportionment of the land to two and a half tribes that took place before the tribes crossed into
the Holy Land. After securing their promise to support and sustain the work of the Kingdom, Moses
gave Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh an inheritance outside the Holy Land.

"And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half
the tribe of Mannaseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of
Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round
about." (Num. 32:33).

The Kingdom of God must obtain farmland in order to sustain its economic activity. After the tithe, which
supports the priesthood and the religious outreach, is paid from profits, most of the remainder will be
used to buy and develop farms.

Some farms will require more development than others, for example orchards and vineyards take
several years to produce income, and dairy farms and farms growing field crops require equipment. All
require minimal prefab housing (kitchen, bathroom, and all purpose room) designed to serve as the
core of an expanding farmhouse. As soon as the farms can support a family, they will be given to a family
that accepts a mortgage for the cost of land and development.

"The farms themselves will carry very unconventional mortgages.
No mortgage will ever be foreclosed.
The payment on the mortgage will be 40% of the annual crops, that 40% plus the 10% tithe means that
farmers who obtain their land through the Kingdom of God will be 50% sharecroppers until the mortgage
is paid off. Interest on the mortgage will be 10%. Interest and payments will be used to buy more farms
and settle more people." ("The Business Model For The Kingdom Of God," No. 112 on this website).

To be chosen, farm families must be Christian Sabbath and Feast  keepers. Farm families will be chosen
based on hours worked on the projects of the Kingdom of God and may choose what type of farm they
want. This is very different from sharing a commune in the jungle.

There are two very different sources of spiritual power in the Bible. There is spiritual power from Satan.

"And no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if
his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; those end shall be according to
their works." (2 Cor. 11:14,15).

Jim Jones has been accused of desecrating the Bible and other corrupt practices. While I don't know
the details, his fate and the fate of his followers leads me to believe that his power came from Satan. Of
such men it is said, their "end shall be according to their works."

I do know the details of David Koresh's ministry. He shot his enemies, broke up marriages, broke the
laws of this country with preteen sexual partners, and preached himself as a messiah. His power was
definitely from Satan, and the fate of his people was the result.

On the other hand, spiritual power from God is given to the righteous. This is the power of the disciples
of Christ, who kept the Law of Moses (as amended by Christ, who did away with the sacrifice of animals
and temple offerings) and the words of Christ. Of such men, Christ prophesied:

"And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak
with new tongues; they shall take up serpents (and turn them into shepherd rods); and if they drink any
deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." (Mark
16:17,18).

{Many people, hearing of this promise are amazed at the lack of spiritual power among the professed
believers in Christ. This lack of spiritual power the result of ignoring the Sabbath and Feast days which
Christ kept and upheld.

"For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle hall in no wise pass from the
law, till all be fulfilled. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the
righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."
(Matt. 5:18,20). The scribes and the Pharisees at least kept the ceremonial law of the temple.}

Spiritual powers from Satan is a death curse on those it ensnares, while spiritual power from God leads
to salvation. As a general rule of thumb, if a spiritual leader does not raise up the Bible in its entirety, it
is dangerous to follow him.

For centuries it was expected that the Kingdom of God would be founded by one of the Gentile nations.
As Christ told the chief priests and the Pharisees, "the Kingdom of God shall be taken from you and
given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof." (Matt. 21:43).

Because of this expectation, Christian churches illuminating the Bible's promises of God's Kingdom and
calling for a return to the Sabbath and the Feast days of the Bible have been a special target of Satan's
wrath. The Branch Davidians (who preach the Sabbath and the Feasts and the Kingdom and have the
prophetic message) have disintegrated into a few small flocks whose leaders preach themselves rather
than Christ. The same situation has prevailed in the World Wide Church of God, which has disintegrated
into a hundred competing factions.

Neither the Seventh Day Adventists or the Davidian SDA keep the Feast days. I have shaken the dust of
my feet at the Seventh Day Adventists. No. 25 on this website, "Philadelphia Or Laodicea" is an attempt
to bring the Davidians into Feast keeping, but as far as I know my attempt has been unsuccessful.

As the prophecy of Micah 4:1-4 makes obvious, the denomination that gathers the Kingdom of God is
teaching the Law of God, "come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the
God of Jacob: and He will teach us of his ways, and we shall walk in His paths: for the law shall go forth
of Zion..." That church also has a prophetic message illuminating the Bible, "and the word of the Lord
from Jerusalem."

The Branch Davidian church that expected to do the gathering with its prophetic message has been
overpowered and destroyed. Other likely Christian denominations are wrongheaded. Therefore, the
Lord moved me to reach out to the Messianic Jews, who keep both the Law and the word of Christ. In
the last few weeks, I sent word of this website to over 150 English speaking Messianic Rabbis.

God, symbolized by the olive tree, is the source of all prophecy. (See No. 22, "The Holy Family.")
Speaking to the Gentiles, the Apostle Paul prophesied that the Jews would be reattached to God's olive
tree, the source of prophecy.

"And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree (member of the lost tribes
with a faulty understanding of God), were grafted in among them, and with them partake of the root and
the fatness (oil, prophecy, see Zech. 4, Matt. 25:1-10) of the olive tree; boast not against the branches.
But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were
broken off, that I might be grafted in. Well, because of unbelief (in Christ) they were broken off, and
thou standest by faith. Be not high-minded, but fear: for if God spared not the natural branches, take
heed lest he also spare thee not. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief (in Christ), shall be
grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again. For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by
nature, and wert grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be
the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?" (Romans 11:17-21,23,24).

The emergence of the Messianic Jews literally fulfills this prophecy. There is no group on earth better
qualified to teach the Law of God than the Messianic Rabbis. However, the Messianic Jews can not
fulfill the prophecy of Micah 4:1-4 without a prophetic message. And since Christ quite clearly took the
Kingdom of God with its prophetic message away from the Jews (see Matt. 21:43 quoted above), the
Messianic Jews will have to look beyond their congregations for "the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."

In the final analysis, the prophetic message does not belong to any church, or even to those who write
it down, but to God. Because it belongs to God, it also belongs to anyone who uses it to do His work.

Judah is the first tribe sealed into the Kingdom of God. (See Rev. 7:5.) Is this because of the leadership
of the Messianic Rabbis? If so, may God bless and keep and protect them.
