RAMIFICATIONS OF JERICHO
One of my tracts, "Thou Must Prophesy Again" explains that the battle of Jericho is the template or
pattern for the establishment of God's Kingdom. Jericho was a godless city. It also was a fortress, a
walled city with defenders on the walls. It was quite capable of defending itself from normal attack. The
Battle of Jericho was fought not by men, but by God. And the Battle of Jericho was the first battle fought
as God's people came to take possession of the Holy Land that God had promised to them. After the
Battle of Jericho, the tribes of Israel had a foothold in the Holy Land.

What then does Jericho mean to us? "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples
(examples): and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come." (1 Cor.
10:11). The Battle of Jericho must have an end time application.

Jericho symbolizes the godless world which is to be overthrown by God's Kingdom. (As promised in Dan.
2:31-45). The godless are totally in control of the earth. Their ownership of earth is protected by armies
and judges and terrible weapons. (See No. 15, "Know Your Enemy.") Only God could overthrow them.

Before the end time, the Kingdom of God has no land. "Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for,
behold, the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:21). As the end time begins, land is wrested from
those churches preaching the Kingdom of God. (See No. 1, "Overview" and No. 6, "King Of The Hill.")
Only God can establish a foothold for His people in this godless world.

There are four classes of people who come to view in the Battle of Jericho. First there are the true
Israelites who marched and shouted and followed God's orders exactly. These represent the tithe paying,
Sabbath and Feast and Commandment keeping people of the church who are following God's orders as
given in the Bible (with a few amendments by Christ who replaced the animal sacrifice with the bread and
the wine, for example.)

Second, there are the heathens of Jericho who reject God and intend to keep everything they have and
defend their city. These represent the godless world. They are destroyed. "And the city shall be
accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are
with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent." (Josh. 6:17).

Third, there is Rahab, who hid the spies that Israel sent into the city. (See Joshua 2.) Rahab and all her
brethren were spared in the destruction of Jericho. "And the young men that were spies went in, and
brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they
brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot
alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day;
because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho." (Josh. 6:23,25). Rahab and her
brethren represent those in the godless world who help the fledgling Kingdom, particularly in the time of
the decree that prohibits all those who do not have the mark of the beast in their hand or in their
forehead from buying and selling. (See Rev. 13:16,17.) They engage in barter with Kingdom trading posts
and pay tithe to the Kingdom. Note that Rahab was a harlot, a sinner, but she became part of Israel for her
services to God.

Fourth, there is Achan, who stole from God. Before the battle of Jericho, God instructed that "all the
silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the
treasury of the Lord." (Joshua 6:19).

When confronted Achan confessed how he stole from God. "And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I
pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast
done; hide it not from me. And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed, I have sinned against the Lord
God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done. When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment,
and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and
took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it." (Joshua
7:19-21).

Achan and his were stoned and burned with fire. "And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son
of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and
his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had ... And all Israel stoned him with
stones and burnt them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. Wherefore the name of that
place is called the valley of Achor, unto this day." (Joshua 7:24-26).

Achan represents those who steal from God.  "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say,
Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed
me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine
house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven,
and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."  (Mal. 3:8-10). Those in
the Kingdom of God must tithe, and should also present offerings when God has blessed them. Those
who do not tithe will be ejected when Christ sends His angels to cast out "all things that offend, and them
which do iniquity." (Matt. 13:41).

Since we are finished with the symbolism of those participating in the battle, let's look at the symbolism of
the battle itself. The battle is in two parts. First, there are the instructions to Joshua. (Josh. 6:1-5). Then
there is the actual battle. (Josh. 6:6-26). The angel messages of Rev. 14 (seven in all) are the instructions
for each day of the battle. The seven angels sounding their trumpets in the Revelation are symbols of the
actual battle. This is a key concept, make sure you understand.

The first six angels sounding their trumpets are like the priests blowing their ram's horn trumpets while
walking around Jericho once a day for six days. The seven thunders are like the seven trips around
Jericho on the seventh day. Remember that the thunders will take place between the sixth trumpet and
the seventh trumpet. So it is in the battle of Jericho.

After the thunders, there is a loud and long blast of trumpets which is like the seventh trumpet. This is
followed by a great shout which is like the Loud Cry that gathers the world. Here is that seventh trumpet.
"And the seventh angel sounded (his trumpet); and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The
kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for
ever and ever." (Rev. 11:15). As the great voices are heard in heaven, the loud cry is heard on earth.
Note that this means that all God's people have to do to gather his Kingdom is carry the message of the
Kingdom to the world. God will arrange the rest.

This concept explains several mysteries. First, the Kingdom of God was not gathered by the angel
messages of Rev. 14, because they are the instructions of the battle rather than the battle itself. Second,
because we know of the connection between the angel messages and the angels blowing their trumpets,
we can more fully understand what will happen during the trumpets.

For example, the identity of the great star Wormwood, which is to fall as the third angel blows his
trumpet, can be discerned. "And the third angel sounded (his trumpet), and there fell a great star from
heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of
waters; and the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood;
and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter." (Rev. 8:10,11).

Translation of the name Chernobyl (Wormwood) gives a clue of the nature of the star called Wormwood.
There was a nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Moreover, the third of the angel messengers was V. T. Houteff
(see "Seven American Angels" coming soon). His ministry stretched from 1928 to 1955. During this span,
the American government developed nuclear bombs, which were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in
1945. It is this knowledge of nuclear weapons coming to earth which the star Wormwood represents.
While what happened in Houteff's time was terrible, it was only a instruction of the horror of full fledged
nuclear war which will take place during or after the time of the third trumpet.

Note in the scripture that "many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter." (Rev. 8:11). This
is the effect of nuclear fallout, contaminated water (particularly rainwater immediately after the bombs)
can kill you. If you live in the country you should dig a hole at the top of your stock pond bank deep
enough so that the bottom of the hole fills with water. Cover this hole to protect it from rainwater and
take water from the hole to drink for you and your livestock. A supply of bottled water in glass containers
is also a good idea.

Another mystery is the identity of the four angels who will be loosed from the Euphrates river after the
sixth trumpet sounds. V. T. Houteff has written about this, without revealing the identities of the angels
(messengers). Here is the scripture.

"And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before
God, saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great
river Euphrates.  And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a
month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men." (Rev. 9:13-15).

Houteff said: ""The voice which came from the golden altar said "to the sixth angel which had the
trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates." In order to identify "the
four angels," we must first understand the literal meaning of the river Euphrates."

""The capital city of ancient Babylon was built on either side of the Euphrates, thus dividing the city in
two parts.  The river was also the source of water supplying a fortifying mote about the city.  So because
the ancient Babylonians were the first to build on the banks of the Euphrates, and because the original
application must attach to the original settlers there, the "great river Euphrates" emerges as a type of
"the waters. . . where the whore sitteth" (Rev.  17:15) -- modern Babylon.  And this important truth is
amplified by the fact that the ancient city, Babylon, does not now exist, whereas prophecy calls for a
Babylon today."

""Now in order for there to be a modern Babylon, there must necessarily be a repetition today of the
conditions and events essentially characterizing ancient Babylon in its connection with God's people.
Consequently, their captivity in Babylon, the type (Jer.  29:10), must find its parallel in Babylon, the
antitype.  Very obviously, therefore, the angel's being "bound in the great river Euphrates" must be
figurative of the Christian church during the period of her captivity in antitypical Babylon -- "that great
city" rising after John' s time."

""Furthermore, the statement made by the voice from the golden altar, "loose the four angels which are
bound," conclusively shows that when the "voice" spoke, the church (the angels) was already in captivity
and was to be loosed."

""The execution of the command, "Loose the four angels," meaning to set the church free from her
captivity in Babylon, resulted in her being liberated from her long bondage to the tyranny of church-state
rule, and in the Bible's being restored to God's people, so that they might study and worship in fear and
in favor of no man, and in accountability only to their conscience and to their God.  In the consequent
dissolution of the church-state union, the "four angels" were loosed."" (V. T. Houteff, The Final Warning,
1942, p. 80,81).

Houteff then addresses the content of the message of the four angels, "which were prepared for an
hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men." (Rev.  9:15).

""(1) The only revelation of truth pertaining to and coming "at an hour" is the proclamation of the angel's
announcement: "Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come." Rev.  14:7.""
""(2) The only revelation of truth pertaining to and coming "at a day" is the warning of "the day of
vengeance" (Isa.  63:4), "the great and dreadful day of the Lord," which is to be heralded by the promised
"Elijah the prophet." Mal.  4:5; Testimonies to Ministers, p.  475.""
""(3) The only revelation pertaining to and coming "at a month" is "the latter rain in the first month" (Joel
2:23) -- the light of the angel who is to lighten the earth with his glory (Rev.  18:1; Early Writings, pp.  277,
278).  Then "afterward," says the Lord, "I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh. " Joel 2:28.  Glorious
prophetic promise, it envisages the power that God is to bestow upon His messengers who are to
proclaim the message that is revealed in the time "of the latter rain. " "At the right time" says the Spirit of
Prophecy, "He sends His faithful messengers to do a work similar to that of Elijah. " -- Testimonies, Vol.  5,
p.  254.  (For further study on the latter rain, see The Shepherd's Rod, Vol.  2, pp.  256, 257.)""
""(4) And, finally, the only revelation pertaining to and coming "at a year," and preparing the four angels
"for to slay the third part of men" is says the Lord, "the year of My redeemed. " Isa.  63:4.  And this "year"
at which His people are redeemed is, of course, the time of the sealing and of the deliverance of the
144,000, -- those who are redeemed who escape the slaughter decreed in Ezekiel 9."" (Ibid, p. 87,88).

To summarize, Houteff does not identify the messengers by name, but by their messages. ""These four
messages prepare the four angels "for to slay the third part of men" -- all who fail to receive into their
lives the saving truth of the gospel as revealed in the four messages.  They are, to recapitulate, (1) those
who close their ears to the proclamation of the judgment, which is revealed "at an hour"; (2) those who
heed not the solemn warning of the day of God's vengeance, which is revealed "at a day"; (3) those who
receive not the latter rain, which comes "at a month"; and (4) those who do not join "His redeemed" (the
144,000), who are sealed "at a year." All these who fail to make the needful preparation for gloryland after
the truth is proclaimed to them, shall perish..."" (Ibid, p. 89).

The first of these messengers is easy to identify. It is Ben Roden of the Branch Davidians. He repeated
William Miller's message of judgment (which was a book judgment of the dead in Miller's time). "Fear God,
and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come." (Rev.  14:7). Ben announced the judgment
for the living in 1955 and his church began keeping the Feasts of the Old Testament in 1960. "Fear God,
and give glory to Him" means worship God according to His instructions (and Christ's few modifications)
which are found in the Bible. Those clinging to the instructions of men will worship God in vain when
grace gives way to judgment. Even if they are otherwise good Christians, they will incur a judgment for
following men instead of God.

Here is what God requires of Israel. "Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto Me in the year. Thou shalt
keep the feast of unleavened bread (Passover)... and the feast of harvest, the first fruits of thy labors,
which thou hast sown in the field (Pentecost): and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the
year, when thou hast gathered in thy labors out of the field (Tabernacles). Three times in the year all thy
males shall appear before the Lord God." (Ex. 23:14-17). This now applies to females also, because there
is no difference in the religious obligation of men and women in Christ. "There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." (Gal. 3:
28).

As Paul says; "Let no man therefore judge you in meat (because you eat food God considers unclean), or
in drink (because you misuse alcohol), or in respect of a holyday (Feast), or of the New Moon, or of the
Sabbath days." (Col 2:16). Don't let God judge you in these things either.

Ben Roden is also tied to the judgment of David Koresh. Koresh's judgment, the fire of April 19, 1993 was
over in an hour. Koresh stole the 77 acres Ben, Lois and George Roden repurchased for the church in
1973. (The details are in "An Honest Church History.")

There is a judgment associated with Ben Roden's fourth angel message. "And I looked, and behold a
white cloud, and upon the cloud sat one like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown,
and in his hand a sharp sickle. (During the fourth trumpet, this is Christ's King.) And another angel came
out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in they sickle, and reap: for
the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. And he that sat on the cloud thrust
in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped." (Rev. 14:14-16).

This judgment was delayed for years. Ben Roden died Oct. 22, 1978. Lois Roden, the angel messenger
that followed Ben (who came out of the temple after him and urged him to reap) died in Nov. 1986. I joined
the church on Atonement Day, Oct. 22, 1987. To punctuate the day I joined, God had me marry George
inadvertently in a moment of wrath on Oct. 21, 1987 (I was yelling when I signed, but there were two
people there and George signed the contract himself and used them as witnesses), and again calmly in
front of about twelve witnesses on Oct. 23, 1987. I repented between the two signatures as I kept my first
Atonement Day.

I joined the church 9 years to the day from Ben Roden's death. I stood in his stead as God judged Koresh.
The judgment on Koresh fulfilled several prophecies, but this one shows my role.

"Hath he smitten him, as he smote those who smote him (was it self-defense)? or is he slain according to
the slaughter of them that are slain by him (or was his death deserved; this refers to the armed hostilities
between Koresh and George Roden, and Koresh and the FBI)? In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou
wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind. (George Roden's rambling and
harsh monthly publication "Rough Winds," was named for this scripture. It was debated in the church, but
George did not cease publishing it until the day of the east wind [denotes calamity], his nine years as a
political prisoner.) By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged (this leads to a purification of
the church); and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as
chalkstones that are beaten in sunder (the judgment destroys righteous members who are characterized
as "fruit" and altar stones); the groves and images shall not stand up (the unrighteous members have no
hope, but are destroyed as well). Yet the defensed city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken,
and left like a wilderness (George Roden chased most church members away from the property; despite
its defenders Koresh's church was left a ruin): there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and
consume the branches thereof. (Koresh was a golden calf to his followers, they worshipped him and the
church property became the place of his rest when he took it over in March, 1988. In following him, an
unprincipled man, the branches of the church, were consumed in the judgment on him.) When the
boughs (branches) thereof are withered, they shall be broken off (they were branches of the True Vine
Christ, but they dried up and lost all connection to Christ as they followed Koresh into wickedness): the
women come (myself primarily, but also other women who were using the Standoff to publish the
persecution of the church), and set them on fire (the publicity and the witnesses inside and out caused
the FBI to light the fire): for it is a people of no understanding: therefore He that made them will not have
mercy on them, and He that formed them will shew them no favor (God turns away from their plight
because they followed Koresh instead of Christ)." (Is. 27:7-11). (See also No. 37, "The Great Trumpet of
Isaiah 27".)

In summation, the judgment hour fell on David Koresh, and Ben Roden's fourth angel message was
associated with it. The good news is that it was a delayed judgment. The bad news is that we can expect a
overwhelming version of this judgment associated with the fourth trumpet and the Second Coming of
Christ.

There was also a judgment associated with V. T. Houteff, the third angel messenger. Here is the third
angel's message. “And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the
beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead or his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of
the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be
tormented with fire and brimstone in the
presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who
worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” (Rev. 14: 9-11).

This is the Holocaust which happened during Houteff's ministry (1928 – 1955). In fact, Houteff prophesied
the Holocaust from the prophesies of Ezekiel 4 and 9. “We may suppose that the 390 year period began in
about 1500 A.D., (when Luther found the Bible), and ended in 1890 A.D., where the 40 year period began,
which would end in 1930. However we cannot predict the exact day or month or even year... The
prophecy of Ezekiel gives the information in detail from the beginning of Luther's reformation to Ezekiel
9, marking of the 144,000, and unrolling of the scroll.” (V. T. Houteff, The Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 1, 1930, p.
116).

The application of Ezekiel 9 foretold by Houteff actually took place 430 years after Luther's personal
reformation. Luther was ordained a priest in 1507 and posted the 95 theses on the church door in 1517.
Adding 430 years to each of those years produces the span of years of the Holocaust, 1937 to 1947. That
means that Ezekiel 9, the order to “Slay utterly old and young, both maids and little children, but come not
near any man upon whom is the mark (the seal of God); and begin at my sanctuary;” (the judgment that
begins at the house of God, see 1 Peter 4:17), bypassed Houteff and the SDA and fell on the European
Jews.

(The actual dates of the terrible persecution of the Jews differ slightly. Krystallnacht, the night of broken
glass, Nov. 9/10, 1938 was the beginning of nightmarish persecution with 90+ Jews killed, 25,000 to 30,000
Jews sent to concentration camps and broken glass, looting, and destruction in thousands of Jewish
businesses and hundreds of synagogues. Even the end of WWII in 1945 did not mark the end of the
struggle of the Jews. First they fought the British, then the Arabs in Palestine, before founding the nation
of Israel in 1948. The discrepancy in the dates from Luther's life and the dates of Jewish persecution may
simply be explained by saying that Martin Luther did not begin to question the Catholic Church's
doctrines until after he received his degree in Bible studies in 1908.)

The Jews were and are God's people, the house of God. The judgment fell on them because they had
refused Christ, forgotten God's Law (Ez. 8:11,12) and oppressed their brethren of the lost tribes (Is. 3:13-
15). The smoke of their torment in the death camps arises as a sorrow and a horror that will never be
forgotten. (There is a expanded version of this study of Houteff and the Holocaust in No. 27, "Sudden
Harvest.")

When we put together the fulfillment of the third angel message, which is the instruction of the third
trumpet, and the prophecy of the third trumpet, we can predict the catastrophe that should be expected
in the time of the third trumpet (or if it is delayed, sometime thereafter). It will be a nuclear catastrophe,
because the star Wormwood coming to earth the first time (in the instruction) was the advent of nuclear
war. As in Krystallnacht, it will be a nightmare of broken glass even far distant from the points of bomb
impact in the cities.

But there is worse to come. Survivors will be taken to huge camps "for their own good." Everyone will
find it difficult to leave the camps. This is particularly dangerous for God's people because Satan will
raise an accusation against them, with his minions saying that God's people caused the nuclear war by
predicting it. The camps could become death traps for them. It would be best for God's people, Christians
who keep the Commandments, the Sabbath and the Feasts to get out of the cities as soon as possible.

If ill-chance or incomplete planning find you in a survivor's camp, do not hesitate to hide your religious
leanings. Remember the midwives of Israel who lied to pharaoh to preserve the male babies of Israel?
God blessed them because they were good liars. (Ex. 1:15-21). Think of the children of your church and
present yourself as a Sunday, Christmas and Easter Christian who does not tithe or a non-believer. Do
not group yourself with your church. Do not all tell the same lie.

Based on the Holocaust which started on Krystallnacht, the judgment associated with the third trumpet
will be "at a day." It will start with a day of nuclear war which will be followed by years of horror and
struggle to survive. It is the time of Jacob's trouble. "For thus saith the Lord; We have heard a voice of
trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail (labor) with child?
Wherefore do I see everyman with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail (childbirth), and all faces
are turned into paleness? Alas, for that day (of God's vengeance) is great, so that none is like it: it is
even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it... I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save
thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of
thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished." (Jer. 30:5-7,11).

In this essay, I have explained the prophetic significance of the Battle of Jericho, and tied two angel
messengers to two judgments, at an hour and at a day. I could do this because the judgments had taken
place. I can tell you the names of the other two angels whose messages destroy those they don't save
(Ellen G. White and Lois Roden); but that is as far as I can go now. For more on the angel messengers and
the last judgment of Rev. 14:19,20, see next weeks article No 33, "Seven American Angels."
