The prophecy of the great trumpet (Isaiah 27:13), is fulfilled AFTER the other events of the chapter take
place. It is found in the last verse of the chapter. The events of the chapter start with God's judgment on
"In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing
serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea." (Is. 27:1).
The serpent and the dragon are identified as Satan by John the Revelator. "And the great dragon was
cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out
into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (Rev. 12:9).
So we have "leviathan the piercing serpent." This is Satan who pierced Christ during His crucifixion. And
we have "leviathan that crooked serpent." And this is Satan who has deceived the Christian church.
The leviathan is a sea creature. "So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable,
both small and great beasts. There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play
therein." (Psalms 104:25,26). In fact, all of the three manifestations of Satan in the verse above (leviathan
the piercing serpent, leviathan the crooked serpent and the dragon) are sea creatures. Two are called
Leviathan and God says He will "slay the dragon that is in the sea." So we must next understand what the
The work of V.T. Houteff is very helpful on this point. His comments refer to Rev. 12:3-5. "And there
appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns,
and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast
them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to
devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations
with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to His throne."
Here's part of what Houteff has to say. ""Now the Dragon being fortified with seven heads and ten horns,
denotes that he controlled all the civil and religious powers in that day (for the symbolical number "ten"
denotes universality, just as do the ten toes of Daniel 2, the ten horns of the other Bible beasts, and the
ten virgins of Matthew 25)."
""The horns represent all the civil powers, while the heads represent all the religious powers, for the
Biblical number "seven" denotes completeness. Moreover, the fact that the Church (the Jews), the only
agency through which God worked up to that time, crucified the Lord, is in itself sufficient proof that the
Church had apostatized, that she had become the Dragon's seventh head, and that thus was the Dragon
armed with ten horns and seven heads, -- with all the civil and religious powers."" (V. T. Houteff, Timely
Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 16, p. 19).
So we see that the dragon is in the world, ruling its civil powers. And the dragon is in the church ruling
some of its religious powers. If Satan the dragon had not ruled both church and state in Christ's time,
Christ would not have been crucified.
God has promised to "slay the dragon that is in the sea." This is not a world wide slaughter of Satan's
minions, the sea covers only part of the earth. The sea, as used in Isaiah 27, represents a part of our
world that will be freed from Satan's dominion. This part is the Christian church. "They shall lift up their
voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord, they shall cry aloud from the sea." (Is. 24:14).
This slaying of the dragon is the purification of the church prophesied by Peter. "For the time is come
that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them
that obey not the gospel of God?" (1 Peter 4:17). As you see, Peter knew that the purification of the
church preceded the purification of the rest of the earth. Thus, religious authority would be taken away
That is also the message of Ezekiel 9. "And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through
the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids,
and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at My
sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house." (Ez. 9:5,6).
The slaughter begins with the senior ministry, the ancient men at the sanctuary. They are the first to hear
Elijah's demand that they choose. "And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye
between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow Him: but if Baal, then follow him." (1 Kings 18:21). Satan
has perverted true Bible worship. God has given us a set of instructions which tell us exactly how to
behave and how to worship. He sent His Son to modify these instructions as He raised the Christian
church. The ministry and indeed all Christians who wish to survive the time of trouble MUST follow God's
instructions (with Christ's modifications) instead of Satan's "traditions."
As you will see this chapter is about the beginning of the purification of the Christian church. "In that day
sing ye unto her, A vineyard of red wine. I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it,
I will keep it night and day." (Is. 27:2,3). "The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel..." (Is. 5:
5). Specifically, this is a vineyard of red wine, the church gathered by the blood of Christ. God provides it
with living water (Christ's message) continuously, He guards it day and night.
Many Christians think of themselves as Spiritual Israel, and in this they are correct. But they are also
physical Israel. When the ten tribes of the kingdom Samaria (the northern half of ancient Israel) migrated
away from the Assyrian invasion of their homeland, they went west to Europe. As was their tradition, the
tribe of Dan marked the places of their sojourn with the name of their father, Dn in Hebrew (the Hebrew
language has no vowels). So the Don river and the Danube, and Sweden, and Denmark, and Scandinavia
bear record of their progress. In more recent history, members of the ten tribes migrated south to
France (the north men, Normans), and both the Danes and the Normans conquered England. From
Europe and England, members of the ten tribes settled America.
In the lands where the ten tribes were scattered, they were joined by the members of the tribe of Judah,
who formed the Christian Church, and were taught the message of Christ. This is according to prophecy.
“The Lord hath sent a Word (Christ the Word, see John 1:1,14) into Jacob (to the southern kingdom of
Israel, Judah, who mostly refused Christ the Word), and it (Christ the Word) hath lighted on Israel (the ten
tribes who were scattered in the gentile nations). And all the people shall know (all twelve tribes shall
know of Christ the Word), even Ephraim (royal house of the northern kingdom of the ten tribes) and the
inhabitants of Samaria (descendants of the ten tribes)...” (Is. 9:9,10). Therefore, it is not inconsistent for
the vineyard called "the house of Israel" to be the Christian church.
Christ confirmed that the Christian church was a vineyard. "I am the true vine, and my Father is the
husbandman. Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth
fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear
fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me. I am the vine, ye are the
branches: he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can
do nothing." (John 15:1,2,4,5).
"Fury is not in Me: who would set the briers and thorns against Me in battle? I would go through them, I
would burn them together." (Is. 27:4). God's people have fallen far from righteousness, they are briers
and thorns in His eyes. "The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge:
the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity." (Micah 7:4). Although
God's people are far from perfect, He is not angry with them and He does not want to go to battle against
them. He loves them.
"Or let Him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me."
(Is. 27:5). God is determined to protect those who make peace with Him. They may trust in His strength. It
is not hard to make peace with God. He has given mankind a book of instructions about what pleases
Him; it is called the Holy Bible. (For the ways that the Christian churches have departed from the Bible,
study No. 16, "A Warning To The Little Sheep.")
"He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the
world with fruit."(Is. 27:6). God will plant Jacob in the earth, He will "cause them that come of Jacob to
take root." As Christ says; "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." (Matt. 5:5). As Micah
says; "But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them
afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it." (Micah 4:4). In that day, God's people shall be
called the branch of His planting. "Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for
ever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I may be glorified." (Is. 60:21).
The first instruction given to mankind will continue in force. "And God blessed them, (Adam and Eve) and
God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply..." (Gen. 1:28). So "Israel shall blossom and bud" and bring
forth children after they have received their inheritance, as foretold by prophecy. "And it shall come to
pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the strangers that sojourn among
you, which shall beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the
children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel." (Ez. 47:22).
The children are called the fruit of mankind, but there is more to this prophecy. Saints are also fruit. As
Christ said; "I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth
forth much fruit." (John 15:5). True converts to Christ are "fruit." So it is that the children born in God's
Kingdom, the fruit of His purified people will be saints. Here is another related prophecy. "In that day
shall the branch of the Lord (His people which He has planted in His Kingdom) be beautiful and glorious,
and the fruit of the earth (children) shall be excellent and comely (healthy and good-looking and
righteous) for them that are escaped of Israel." (Is. 4:2). Those who "are escaped of Israel" are God's
people who escape God's judgments on Satan and survive the end-time.
The chapter continues with the events that lead up to the beginning of Ezekiel 9.
"Hath he smitten him, as he smote those who smote him? or is he slain according to the slaughter of
them that are slain by him?" (Is. 27:7). These questions refer to the shootouts of George Roden and
David Koresh (originally Vernon Howell). Was it self-defense in November 1987 when Koresh wounded
George Roden? Did he have to bring 7 men, semi-automatic rifles, and 3000 bullets onto the church
property to defend himself from George? As an eye witness to this shootout, I would answer, No; but a
jury refused to convict Koresh and the seven. There was even more controversy in 1989 when George
Roden wrestled a gun away from Dale Adair (who some claim was in league with Koresh) and killed Dale
with it. Was that self defense as George claimed? Then there was the Standoff in 1993. Did Koresh
deserve to die after the first day of the Standoff because four members of the ATF died and 16 were
wounded? Was he "slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him?" Was Koresh slain at
all? He certainly built four escape tunnel entries under the building he and his followers constructed.
The tunnel entries were fairly evenly spaced from the south east corner to the north west corner of the
building. He intended to escape. Did he do so or was he slain?
Now the focus is on George Roden alone. "In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it: he
stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind." (Is. 27:8). George Roden's rambling and harsh
monthly publication "Rough Winds," was named for this scripture. He showed it to me in the Bible one
day. George's "Rough Winds" was debated in the church, but George did not cease publishing it until the
day of the east wind. An east wind denotes calamity, in George's case this was his nine years as a political
This shooting war leads to the purification of the church. "By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be
purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as
chalkstones that are beaten in sunder; the groves and images shall not stand up." (Is. 27:9). The
judgment destroys righteous members who are characterized as "fruit" and "altar stones." The
unrighteous members are characterized as "groves" and "images," they have no hope, but are
destroyed as well.
Zechariah 5 makes the point that the judgment of the living CAN destroy the righteous if they cohabit with
the wicked. "Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. And he said unto
me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the
breadth thereof ten cubits. Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the
whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that
sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it
shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by My name: and it
shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones
thereof." (Zech. 5:1-4). Ben Roden, in his tract, "The Flying Roll," identifies this flying roll as the Holy Bible.
Ben said; "Ten is a number figurative of universality. Twice ten is twenty or twice universal. This could
mean the word of God to ancient Israel and the world, (universal in her day) and again in the New
Testament period, our day – both B.C. and A.D. In other words, ten by ten is the Bible and twenty by ten is
representative of both Bibles – the Old and the New. Just as in Zechariah 4:11-14, the two olive trees,
one on each side of the "golden candlestick," are figurative of the Word of God to Zerubbabel, or Israel,
in both the Old and the New dispensations. The Word of God, ten by ten, is depicted as a closed book. On
the other hand, the Bible represented as twenty by ten symbolizes the Bible as an "open Book " with the
active Spirit of Prophecy at work (Rev. 12:17; 19:10)." (Ben Roden, "The Flying Roll", 1969, p. 12; this tract,
which discusses the sellout of the church by Florence Houteff Eakin, is also of interest to history buffs.)
The Bible as an open book, ten by twenty, with the Spirit of Prophecy at work, is a message that divides
the righteous (who accept it) from the unrighteous (who refuse it). A message, in short, like this one. The
curse on the unrighteous which accompanies the flying roll "shall enter into the house of the thief, and
into the house of him that sweareth falsely by My name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and
shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof." (Zech. 5:4).
"Timber" is a symbol of great men, the support of the house. God's people are sometimes characterized
as trees. "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for
mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of
righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified." (Is. 61:2). The Assyrian was
characterized as a cedar tree. (See Ezekiel 31:3). Timber is the underlying structure of such men, their
strength and power, their greatness.
"Stones" are saints. Simon Peter was a stone. "One of the two which heard John speak, and followed
him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We
have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when
Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by
interpretation, A stone." (John 1:40-42). The point here was that there were some great and righteous
people in Koresh's church, but they were in the house of a man who stole a church, defiled little girls and
shot his enemies. The judgment for David Koresh's sins came upon his whole flock.
"Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there
shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof." (Is. 27:10). George
Roden chased most church members away from the property. The tithe dried up and the property became
rundown. George defended the church property with a gun and a pack of dogs, but "the defenced city
shall be desolate." Koresh's church was left empty, "the habitation forsaken" as the church members
were arrested or killed. The property was untended, "left like a wilderness." Koresh was a golden calf to
his followers, they worshipped him and the church property became the place of his rest when he took it
over in March, 1988, "there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down." In following him, an
unprincipled man, the branches of the church were consumed in the judgment on him, the calf shall
"consume the branches thereof."
"When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire:
for it is a people of no understanding: therefore He that made them will not have mercy on them, and He
that formed them will shew them no favour." (Is. 27:11). Koresh's followers started out as Christians. They
were branches of the True Vine Christ. They dried up (withered) and lost all connection to Christ (broke
off) as they followed Koresh into wickedness. Women, myself primarily, but also Teresa Moore, used the
Standoff to publish the persecution of the church creating a situation that caused the FBI to light the fire,
"the women come, and set them on fire." The publicity and the witnesses to the conspiracy by
government officials that aided and abetted the 941 acre land ripoff in the 1960s and gave the church to
Koresh in 1988 caused an embarrassing political situation. The fire was an attempt to resolve that
situation. Many of Koresh's people died in the fire. God turned away from their prayers because they
followed Koresh instead of Christ, "it is a people of no understanding: therefore He that made them will
not have mercy on them, and He that formed them will shew them no favour."
Next is the prophecy of the great trumpet. "And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall beat
off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye
children of Israel. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they
shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and
shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem." (Is. 27:12,13).
The river is the river of life, a living water spiritual message that flows from the throne of God. This river
flows from the earthly temple after the Holy City has come down from heaven. "And he shewed me a pure
river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of
the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of
fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."
The same river is shown to Ezekiel in vision flowing from the Holy Temple in heaven. "Afterward he
brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of
the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down
from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. And it shall come to pass, that
every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be
a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and
every thing shall live whither the river cometh. And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and
on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be
consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of
the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine." (Ez. 47:1,9,12).
The Lord directs some of this river out of its channel into the stream of Egypt. Egypt is a symbol of the
pleasure loving world. Egypt's stream is its spiritual message. That means that this living water spiritual
message is added at God's will to the spiritual message of the pleasure loving Christians of the English
As a result, Isaiah tells us, "ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel." So in a small way, a
few of the children of Israel are gathered. This is not the gathering of all 144,000 of the tribes of Israel,
but rather the first unsuccessful attempt to gather them that precedes it.
Then the great trumpet is blown and the gathering of the 144,000 of the tribes of Israel succeeds. "And it
shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were
ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in
the holy mount at Jerusalem." (Is. 27:13). Assyria is a symbol of those satanic nations and kingdoms which
oppress and persecute God's people. God's people are barely able to survive in such nations. Egypt is a
symbol of the pleasure loving world. God's people are outcasts in Egypt, they put God's Kingdom first in
All those gathered go to "worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem." They meet the Lamb on
Mount Zion in Jerusalem and learn the new song. "And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion
(Zion), and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having His Father’s name written in their
foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great
thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: and they sung as it were a new song
before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the
hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth." (Rev. 14:1-3).
There is not just one trumpet, there are seven. "And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets
prepared themselves to sound." (Rev. 8:6). I have assumed for years that earthly persons representing
these seven angels met in person to prepare to sound, but as I was writing this article the Holy Ghost
told me that this preparation was a solitary activity and that these representatives need not get to know
each other anymore than the angel messengers of Rev. 14 needed to know each other. Like membership
in the 144,000, blowing one of these trumpets is an office to which a person can only be called.
The seven trumpets are presented in historical context by V. T. Houteff in his tract, "The Final Warning."
